Veja abaixo a posição da quatro principais luas de Júpiter que são visíveis facilmente com um binóculo. A faixa horizontal central representa o planeta Júpiter, para facilitar a leitura use uma régua colocada verticalmente na hora de Brasília aproximada da observação.
As luas cruzam pela frente de Júpiter do leste (E) para o oeste (W) e por trás de Júpiter do oeste (W) para o leste (E). Neste período, após passarem por trás de Júpiter, no lado leste (E) poderemos observar, mesmo com um binóculo, a entrada das luas na sombra de Júpiter, isto é, o eclipse das luas de Júpiter. Na passagem pela frente do disco de Júpiter, com telescópios mais poderosos, podemos ver o trânsito da luas e/ou da sombra da lua sobre o disco do planeta. A faixa vermelha horizontal no centro do gráfico representa a largura do disco de Júpiter.
